This studio is like a warm hug wrapped in inclusivity and openness.
When I joined their ballet class as a trial, the school kids were off enjoying their break. The adult ballet and other dance classes are still running during the school term break. That decision right there? It made me feel valued. A lot of dance studios provide adult ballet classes however, that is not their main focus. Sometimes, when attending adult ballet classes at a studio primarily focused on children's dance programs, it can feel like adults are there primarily to supplement the studio's schedule during off-peak times. This may be a practical business decision I understand that, but honestly can make me feel undervalued. Well at Dance Habit, it feels different!
But wait, it gets even better. Dance Habit hosts separate end-of-year concerts, exclusively for adults. It is like they're saying, "You matter, you are not just the furniture and backdrop".
Classes
Dance Habit offers adult ballet classes at beginner and intermediate levels, with a weekly pointe class. Their new purpose-built studios are meticulously clean, perfect for individuals with preferences like mine—I'm a bit of a clean freak and can't stand seeing hair on the floor! Dance Habit also offers a variety of adult dance classes, including Jazz, tap, hip hop, strength and conditioning, contemporary, and lyrical.
Their 60-minute ballet classes start at the barre, progress to the centre, and follow a standard format to traditional ballet. They incorporate classical music and begin with basic exercises like pile and tendu, gradually advancing to movements involving larger movements, such as grand battement (kicking your leg up). Due to the class duration, allegro (jumps) are omitted, although they may be included on certain days, depending on the class focus. The classes are not from a specific syllabus or method, it's fairly neutral.
