Based between warehouses is a hidden gem for adult ballet classes, the Academy Of Dance (AOD) in Epping. This dance studio mainly offers children's dance classes; however, they have two adult dance classes on Mondays: one is a ballet/lyrical class, and the other is an adult jazz class. I found their timetable online and followed it to attend the classes. I'm not sure if it's because the school recently merged with another dance school and there are some teething issues. When I arrived, the class time posted online was incorrect. The studio sends you a link through email. My link was not working, maybe another teething issue, or I am just not tech savy! However, the friendly staff helped me enroll and booked for a class. The class turned out to be two hours later than what was posted on the website. Since Costco Epping was closed, I decided a trip to the petrol station and grocery shopping was a good idea.
Classes
I only tried the open ballet/lyrical class and not the Jazz class. The class size was small so you will definitely get some individual attention from the ballet teacher. This is hard to get in a large classes. What a bonus!
I believe the teacher tailors the class depending on who attends that day as it is an open ballet class, meaning anyone from absolute beginners or professionals can walk through the door. If you're looking to explore dancing and movement, this is a good place to start. If you are more experienced, this is a good place to refine your skills. You can always make the class as hard as you want. Go on demi pointe, add in the double frappes, add in the beats; you'll know what to do. The teacher demonstrated all the exercises, both at the barre and in the center. They also participated in most of the exercises alongside us. I know that not every ballet teacher does this. I came out drenched in sweat after the class, which is what I was looking for, a good workout.
AOD also operate another dance studio in Malvern, which offers a wider range of adult classes with experienced teachers. It seems like they are working towards expanding their adult class offerings in the area. It could be worthwhile to keep an eye on this studio and revisit in a few months to see if they introduce more classes.
Transport
There is off-street parking right outside the dance studio, so if you are driving there, parking will not be an issue. AOD is also very close to Epping Plaza. If you are catching public transport, you can take a bus and get off at Epping Plaza, then walk across to the studio.
Booking for a class and price
The staff sent me a link via email that allowed me to register when I arrived at the studio. The first class trial was free, and subsequently, classes are around $19.50 each. You have the option of paying weekly or per term. There is an EFTPOS machine available for paying for the class.
Lace up those ballet shoes, and let's dance our hearts out!
